History

Whiskey and ginger combine with a fresh zing of lime.

The Cablegram first appeared in William "Cocktail" Boothby's 1908 book, The World's Drinks and How to Mix Them. Boothby described it as "A Bourbon Whiskey and Ginger Ale Highball with a little sour added..." In 2009, Eric Alperin at The Varnish in Los Angeles, USA, revitalized this drink. His version replaces ginger ale with a mix of ginger syrup and soda, and uses a rye whiskey base for a stronger profile.
