History

A dry yet approachable variation of the Brooklyn cocktail, with faint maraschino and bittersweet herbal complexity.

The Brooklyn Cocktail, one of several Manhattan variations named after New York's five boroughs, drew inspiration from the already popular Manhattan and Bronx cocktails. The earliest known printed mention of the Brooklyn Cocktail appears in Jacob A. Grohusko's 1908 Jack's Manual. BROOKLYN COCKTAIL 1 dash Amer. Jacob 'Jack' Grohusko, who was the head bartender at Baracca's Restaurant on Wall Street in lower Manhattan, resided in Hoboken, New Jersey. His only indirect connection to Brooklyn was that Victor Baracca, the owner of Baracca's, hailed from the borough. Nevertheless, he immortalized the area in the cocktail world. In 1913, Jacques Straub included a version of the cocktail in his Straub's Manual of Mixed Drinks that utilized French [dry] vermouth, differing from the Italian [sweet] vermouth featured in Grohusko's recipe. The Brooklyn can also be found in Harry Cradock's 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book, prepared with 2/3 Canadian Club whisky and 1/3 French vermouth, along with dashes of Amer Picon and Maraschino. Patrick Gavin Duffy's 1934 Official Mixer's Manual also favored the ratio of 2/3 rye whiskey to 1/3 French vermouth.
