History

The quality of marmalade significantly impacts this tangy drink's success. For convenience, select 'fine cut' or 'shredless' orange marmalade.

This modern take on the Martini was created in 1996 by Salvatore Calabrese, a bartender and long-term President of the United Kingdom Bartender's Guild. Salvatore, who is of Italian heritage, typically has only a quick espresso for breakfast. One morning, his English wife, Sue, insisted he have a proper breakfast and served him toast with marmalade. While enjoying the tangy preserve on his toast, Salvatore conceived the idea for his Breakfast Martini and brought the jar to work. Later that day, at London's Library Bar in the Lanesborough Hotel, he finalized his signature cocktail. Interestingly, Harry Craddock's 1930 book, The Savoy Cocktail Book, features a "Marmalade Cocktail" recipe that bears a strong resemblance to Salvatore's Breakfast Martini. However, Salvatore states that his drink was inspired by the traditional English breakfast, not the classic English bartending book.
