History
A variation on the pre-Prohibition classic Brainstorm, served without ice instead of on the rocks.
The Brainstorm is a classic cocktail that first appeared in Hugo R. Ensslin's 1917 book, Recipes for Mixed Drinks (2nd Edition). It might have also been included in his 1916 first edition. Similar to many of Ensslin's recipes, it was later included in Harry Craddock's 1930 book, The Savoy Cocktail Book. Both of these vintage books specify that this cocktail should be served on-the-rocks. The version served straight-up, which is now more popular, was created in 2022 by Al Sotack at Jupiter Disco, a science fiction-themed cocktail bar in Brooklyn, New York City, USA. The recipe from the vintage books is as follows: BRAIN STORM COCKTAIL: Cube of Ice, 2 dash Bénédictine, 1 piece Orange Peel, 2 dashes French Vermouth, 1 drink of Irish whiskey. Use an Old Fashioned Cocktail glass and serve with a small bar spoon in glass.
