Zachary Gelnaw-Rubin created this cocktail in collaboration with fellow bartender Abraham Hawkins at Dutch Kills in New York City. It is named after the 1948 Italian neorealist drama film Bicycle Thieves (Italian: Ladri di biciclette), directed by Vittorio De Sica. The cocktail was first published in the 2016 book Regarding Cocktails.
