History

A sweet, creamy dessert cocktail made more complex by raspberry eau-de-vie. Substitute raspberry jam with two heaped barspoons stirred into gin before cream.

This cocktail is adapted from a recipe found in Hugo R. Ensslin's 1917 book, Recipes for Mixed Drinks (2nd Edition), and may also appear in the first edition from 1916. It is probable that this cocktail was created at and is named after the Belmont Hotel, which was located at 120 Park Avenue, Manhattan. The hotel opened in 1908, shortly before the nearby Wallick Hotel. The original recipe is as follows: BELMONT COCKTAIL 2/3 Gin 1/3 Raspberry Syrup Pony of sweet Cream Shake well in a mixing glass with cracked ice, strain and serve.
