History
A Negroni variation with vermouth, amaro, and tawny port, producing a dry, lightly bitter digestif. (Using richer ruby port makes the structure weaker.)
This drink is adapted from a recipe created in 2008 by Phil Ward at Death & Co. in Manhattan, New York City. It is named after the 1982 historical novel by the Portuguese author José Saramago. The novel tells the story of a wounded soldier, Baltasar, and a mysterious woman, Blimunda, who become involved in an ambitious 18th-century project to construct a flying machine, concurrent with the Portuguese crown's building of the grand Mafra Convent. The book combines history with magical realism to examine themes of power, faith, love, and the human toll of immense ambition.
