History

Aromatic bitters contribute significantly to the flavour and colour of this vinous aperitivo. Halve the gomme syrup for a drier cocktail.

The first known mention of the Arkwood Cocktail is in The Berner-Mayer Co.'s 1895 Bartender's Guide, which was published anonymously. The guide provides the following preparation for the Arkwood Cocktail: Arkwood Cocktail. Angostura bitters 2 dashes, gum 2 dashes, ½ sherry ½ vermouth. Instructions for the Arkwood Cocktail were also detailed: ARKWOOD COCKTAIL. LARGE BAR GLASS. – Put in some cracked ice, two dashes bitters, two dashes gum, ½ wine-glass Sherry, ½ wineglass Vermouth. Stir and strain into cocktail glass. And repeated again: ARKWOOD COCKTAIL Large bar glass. – Put in some cracked ice, two dashes bitters, two dashes gum, ½ wine glass Sherry, ½ wine glass Vermouth.
