History
A Fifty-Fifty Martini variation with a hint of kümmel. Success depends on your choice of dry vermouth and chilling ingredients thoroughly.
Adapted from a recipe in Hugo R. Ensslin's 1917 Recipes for Mixed Drinks (2nd Edition). ALLIES COCKTAIL. ½ French Vermouth ½ English Gin 2 dashes Russian Kummel Stir well in a mixing glass with cracked ice, strain and serve. Created during World War I (1914-1918), this cocktail refers to an alliance between English gin, French vermouth and (Russian) kummel (the origins of which are linked to Tsar Peter the Great).
